MODESTO, CA(October 15, 2010) – Greg Mortenson, co-author of #1 New York Times bestseller Three Cups of Tea and co-founder of the nonprofit Central Asia Institute and founder of Pennies for Peace will speak at the Gallo Center for the Arts about “promoting peace through education” on Saturday, November 20 at 8:00 p.m. Mortenson, considered a hero in rural Pakistan and Afghanistan , established more than 140 schools that educated over 64,000 children, including 52,000 girls.

Born in 1957, Mortenson grew up near Mt. Kilimanjaro , Tanzania . He served in the U.S. Military in Germany , where he received the Army Commendation Medal, and later graduated from the University of South Dakota in 1983.
The book Three Cups of Tea recounts the story of Mortenson’s 1993 climb of K2 and subsequent recovery in a small rural town in Pakistan for seven weeks. In return for their kindness, he promised to build the town its first school and began his tireless effort to champion education, especially for girls. Three Cups of Tea has sold over 3.6 million copies, been published in 41 countries, and a New York Times bestseller for over three years since its 2007 release. In addition, it was selected as Time Magazine’s Asia Book of The Year.
Greg Mortenson’s second book, Stones into Schools, picks up where Three Cups of Tea left off in 2003, recounting his relentless, ongoing efforts to establish schools for girls in Pakistan and Afghanistan . It will be released in paperback in October 2010.
