SUSD: New trustees, new balance, same deficit

Stockton, CA / Bilingual Weekly
Newly elected Stockton Unified School District trustees Sara Cazares and David Varela were sworn in this Tuesday, December 14, 2010, changing the delicate balance of influences for a second time this year.
Varela replaced retiring Beverly McCarthy and Cazares took the seat of William “Bill” Ross, who had become the most vocal and controversial trustee in Board in the last few years.
Ever since Superintendent Anthony Amato’s policies divided the Board, McCarthy and Ross had formed the lesser alliance —often joined by Salvador Ramirez— that questioned and opposed mostly any proposed change seeking jump-start the stagnant district’s academic performance. In June the trio got a new ally when a loose coalition —set on punishing whoever sided with Amato in his short-lived tenure— succeeded on recalling Trustee Daniel Castillo, replacing him with a trustee Ross helped to campaign for. The Board will face a new, staggering deficit again in 2011.
