Stockton-raised artist and UTPA (University of Texas-Pan American) Art Department Lecturer, Paul Valadez recently received the good news from two major museums regarding the acquisitions of his serigraph, Abuela which was printed in collaboration with The Serie Project in Austin, TX.
Both The El Museo del Barrio in New York City and The National Hispanic Cultural Center in Albuquerque, New Mexico are acquiring the artwork of Paul Valadez to be a part of their permanent museum collections.
Valadez created the print in collaboration with The Serie Project after being chosen
to participate in the AIR/Artist-in-Residence Program in June 2010.
“I am humbled that my work has been accepted as a part of the permanent collections in these two important arts and cultural institutions”. “It’s amazing to know that work that I create which is inspired by my life in the Rio Grande Valley will now reside in venues for so many people to see,” said Valadez, “in South Texas we have such a vibrant art scene, I am proud to be a part of it and to be able to spread the word about the wonderful cultural scene we are lucky to have here.”
Paul Valadez grew up in Stockton, CA, where he graduated from Stagg High School and attended San Joaquin Delta College prior to attending the San Francisco Art Institute where he earned his BFA in Interdisciplinary Art in 1997. Valadez earned his MFA in Studio Art from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill where he was awarded a Weiss Urban Livability Fellowship. Currently he is a fulltime lecturer in the Art Department at The University of Texas Pan America in Edinburg, TX.
