A poem by Sandi Castañon-Ramirez, Stockton, CA
This dream will not dry up
It will not fester as some sore
For this dream is indestructible
It will strengthen social justice
In a land lacking freedom and equality
It will destroy and conquer
The evils of discrimination
It has ignited within us
It burns in the hearts of our gente
It has exploded around us
Every little piece has pierced
Our sense of duty
It has inspired, united, awakened
Many who were dormant
A new movement has begun
Stronger than the one before
Mightier than the ones to come
More powerful than any fantasy
Massive in its impact
For this dream is the fountain
Of life
Rebirth from the streams of the earth
From the sweat of its people
From the tears of the oppressed
Running water for the thirsty
Cleansing liquid for the weary
It will become a reality
It will be a source of life
For we will continue to fight
El grito will cry throughout this land
This land that God created for all of His people
It will echo from every mountainside
Breeze through every valley
Resound through every crevice
Of the nation.
Arise, my gente
Stand strong, together
Join hands in unity
Raise them to God
Lift your voices in harmony
Sing of a new day
For there is strength in numbers
