Close to a thousand fans lined up the perimeter of the Stockton Civic Auditorium on the late afternoon of Wednesday, January 19, 2011, to have a peek of the San Francisco Giants World Champions trophy.
Based in San Francisco, California, the Giants are a Major League Baseball (MLB) team playing in the National League West Division. They defeated the Texas Rangers (4-1) in the 2010 World Series to become the current World Series champions.
The Trophy’s Stockton stop was the eighth on a national tour that will take the coveted icon to 32 Northern California cities, three border locations, one Arizona and three New York cities.
These include Scottsdale, AZ, where the team does its spring training; Troy, NY, where the club was founded; Cooperstown, NY, home to the Baseball Hall of Fame; and New York City —where the franchise operated until 1957 when they moved to California.
Although there were single men standing at the orange and black-sprinkled line sneaking its way into the Auditorium and the Trophy display, couples and families were predominant.
“I’ve waited for this since 1958,” said fan Jose Ortega as he posed for photos with his family behind the trophy at the Auditorium, “I guess ‘cause I’ve been a Giants’ fan all my life.”
Sharon Norbutas —struggling with her 5-month twins and son Bobby, 9— wished her husband could be there. Mario Vasquez, 45, and her 8-year old daughter, Cienne, said they were there because they are Giants fans “forever”
Among the curiosities, Adolfo Cruz, Director of the City of Stockton Community Services Department, was assessing how many of the people lining outside the Auditorium could actually get inside and have a chance to get a personalized photo with the Trophy. His choice was Michael Conway, 19, because he was the second person —and only male— wearing “Giants orange” shoes. Although at the end everyone was allowed to see the trophy, people behind Conway could only get group pictures.
