Stockton, CA / Bilingual Weekly
According to some odd rules, Stockton Unified School District (SUSD) Trustee David Varela will not only complete departing Board President Colleen Boardman’s term, but also will serve as his own vice-president.
After a 3-3 tie to vote for a new president during the last Board meeting, on Tuesday, March 8, 2011, the just-sworn-in Trustee Angel Jimenez broke the stalemate, siding with Board members Sara Cazares and Jose Morales on defending the right of the vice-president to take over when the president leaves. Opposed were, as before, Steve Smith, Salvador Ramirez and Gloria Allen. The argument on the succession was based on how much experience was required to serve as president, whereas Varela has served nearly two months on the Board.
Allen pointed out that SUSD bylaws offer no provision to replace the vice-president, thus Varela is still it.
