SAN JOAQUIN, CA – Over 300 people gathered to witness the 2011 California State Elementary Spelling Bee hosted by San Joaquin County Office of Education on April 16, 2011. approximately 60 fourth- through sixth-grade students from 31counties in California who were certified as county champions by their County Superintendents of Schools competed for the championship. This is the first year San Joaquin County Office of Education has hosted this event.
Two San Joaquin County students, Annamarie Gayla from Waverly School in Linden Unified School District and Samuel Zelalem from Bella Vista Christian Academy in Tracy, were strong competitors in the State finals. Samuel advanced to round five and Annamarie to round 8 before being eliminated.
After 10 rounds, Aditya Mishra, fourth-grader from Placer County was named as the 2011 California State Spelling Bee champion after spelling the winning word, hieroglyphics, correctly. The four runners-up were Micalyn Struble from Contra Costa County, Sarina Chang from Solano County, Armanjot Bhangu from Sutter County, and Steven Abramowitz from Placer County.
After Mishra’s Mother expressed her happiness for her son’s accomplishments she recognized the efforts of her daughter. “My daughter, Anvita, helped him prepare.” Anvita, for last two years has been the state spelling bee champion and last year placed ninth in nationals of her age-group.
All participating students got MP3 players in addition to participation medals and certificates.
Mishra received a tablet PC along with the championship trophy. The four finalists were also awarded trophies to commemorate their achievement. The electronics are donations from the business community.

I saw this spelling bee on 04/16 (Saturday). San Joaquin County Office of Education has organized the even so well. There were so many tough words and they were organized for each round in the order of difficuly. Congratulations to all the kids who came there for Spelling. They were terrific. Great Job. Congratulations to the finalists and winner.
