(bw) Stockton, CA – During the morning of the 2011 Cinco de Mayo (5th of May) the California State Assembly debated and passed Assembly Bill (AB) 130 —The California Dream Act— legislation that proposes to allow students, with unauthorized immigration status residing in California, to receive privately funded college scholarships.

Assemblymember Gilbert Cedillo Author of the bill, and responsible for other similar bills in the past 6-years, hopes to have a better shot at having the Governor’s signature this year.  “We have a strong base of community members, organizations and students that support the Dream Act, in Los Angeles and the Bay Area,” said Luis Quiñonez, Cedillos’ Legislative Aide at the Concilio’s Coalition meeting — nearly a week earlier. 
    

Quiñonez advocated San Joaquin County to support, “I am here to reach out to folks in the various communities in Northern California.”  A 51-21 vote passed the bill which now moves to the Senate.

“Students have the right to education, while it is illegal to hire them; it is not illegal to educate them” said Cedillo.
