The san Joaquin Valley Air Pollution Control District issued an Air Alert for Thursday, September 29, 2011 for the Valley Air Basin. This includes the counties of San Joaquin, Stanislaus, Merced, Madera, Fresno, Kings, Tulare and portions of Kern.
Washington, D.C. –”The citizens of Stockton deserve to have the best safety and security we can provide,” commented Congressman Jerry McNerney in an announcement that the U.S. Department of Justice Office of Community Oriented policing Services (COPS Office) will be granting Stockton nearly 8 Million dollars in funding for law enforcement and San Joaquin County nearly 5 million.
The $7,817,161 to Stockton, and $4,595,360 to San Joaquin County Sheriffs office will be allocated to law enforcement agencies to hire, preserve, and/or rehire law enforcement officer positions.
Throughout the State of California, 190 new police officers will be created and a total of more than $71 million. “I am pleased that this funding will put more police officers on the streets to protect our families and communities,” said California Senator Barbara Boxer (D-CA).
The grants provide all of the approved salary and benefits for entry-level officer positions for three years and require police departments to retain the grant funded positions for a fourth year.
The grants will support 190 police officers across California, including 25 each in Oakland, Los Angeles and Sacramento.

STOCKTON, CA —On September 30, 2011 a groundbreaking ceremony for the Sperry Road Extension Project at 4554 South El Dorado Street will be held at 11:00 a.m., near the start of construction.
The construction is set to begin in October and is expected to be complete by December 2013. [MORE]The Project aims to provide a direct connection from the Interstate 5/French Camp Road Interchange to the Sperry Road/Performance Drive intersection. This new roadway will include bridges to cross French Camp Slough, El Dorado Street, McKinley Avenue, and the railroads. The roadway will complete the connection between Interstate 5 and State Route 99 for the south Stockton Planning Area.
The purpose of the long-awaited Sperry Road Extension is to reduce existing traffic congestion, improve traffic operations in South Stockton, facilitate the movement of goods and providing services, enhance economic development, and accommodate anticipated travel demands. The Sperry Road extension will be connected to the planned reconstruction of the interchange at French Camp Road and Interstate 5 with a four-lane elevated roadway (two lanes in each direction).
The project was designed by the City of Stockton and the consulting firm of Rajappan & Meyer. The contractor is C. C. Myers, Inc. The construction management will be done by the City of Stockton and Parsons Brinckerhoff.
The project is being funded with Measure K (the local, voter-approved, ½-cent sales tax) dollars, state Proposition 1B Trade Corridor Improvement Fund (TCIF), and local funds.
