If receiving $0.05 per an aluminum can when recycling does not encourage people to live a low-energy life style, the idea of saving up to 2,000 per year on utilities will probably do so. This is the promise of Visionary Home Builders (VHB) of Stockton on their second green project, “Tierra del Sol” a neighborhood of 22 affordable energy green homes. The develop is located at 4701 Farmington Road in Stockton.

In honor of Veterans Day, November 11th, Bilingual Weekly reached out to a member of our community who had served our country. We spoke with Vietnam Veteran Frank Reyes, who welcomed us into his home on November 10, 2011. As we visited with Reyes we met a humble person, an unsung hero to other Veterans. His service to America did not end at the closure of the Vietnam war, today, he continues to serve, annually he provides many Veteran organizations with countless volunteer hours as he helps with several tasks at each of the organizations he serves.

SACRAMENTO, CA—The American Legion’s California division announced today that it has selected Senator Lois Wolk (Davis) as the Senate recipient of its 2011 Legislator of the Year award.
“Senator Wolk has shown support and understanding of the unique challenges faced by veterans in today’s society and we are proud to bestow upon her the honor of Legislator of the Year,” said Hugh Crooks, who heads the Legion’s California branch.
Wolk earned the title for her longtime support of veteran’s issues. Additionally, Wolk authored legislation this year to make it easier for the Dixon American Legion Post and other charities to utilize remote caller bingo, an innovative new fundraising tool that reduces overhead costs while increasing participation and prize pools, allowing for greater fundraising potential.
In Dixon, with the help of remote caller bingo, the American Legion raised enough funds to donate $25,000 within its community in just three months, according to Greg Coppes, commander of Dixon American Legion Post.
Wolk’s bill, which stalled in the Assembly, would have streamlined the lengthy and complicated registration and licensing process required of charities choosing to participate in remote caller bingo, in which audio or video of a live game is broadcast to enable members of an organization (i.e. American Legion, Elks Lodge) to participate from multiple locations throughout the state.
“This is a great honor,” said Wolk. “The American Legion provides vital support for our state and its veterans, especially in these tough economic times. I applaud their efforts, and plan to continue to work to make it easier for nonprofits like the Legion to utilize remote caller bingo.”
The award will be presented to Wolk and Assemblymember Steve Knight (Palmdale), the legion’s Assembly honoree, at the Legion’s Annual Capitol Legislative Day event on April 18, 2012.

I imagine that most of the voters have been watching the results of the debates & the forums that the republican candidates have been having. It seems as though it’s a cat fight for the candidate of choice. Just recently Herman Cain has taken an early lead in all the polls, but I have not heard anyone talking about why it is that he is in the lead. I can see that a few of the candidates as Rick Perry and Michelle Bachman have shot themselves in the foot. The others are just not being featured as the person the republicans want. Even Mitt Romney is not a strong contender for the prize. Herman Cain seems to be the one everyone wants. Is it that he is black and might take some votes away from Obama to even the race? Many have said that Herman Cain will not get the Latino vote, so if Obama loses part of the black vote and some of the Latino vote, we could have a close race. The TEA Party has pretty much endorsed Cain but that could change. Ron Paul has always been a steady contender but is not recognized by the Republican Party, as is Newt Gingrich. So what we are seeing is a fight that won’t make much difference in the primary, but will impact the race against Obama if the right republican is chosen.
The real story will be who the voters vote for to represent the Republican Party, especially with the TEA Party splitting the party in 3rd’s. Many hope that the independent voters will take over and the challenger will be a strong candidate against Obama. One thing for sure, the republicans won’t be spending a lot of money on any candidate to beat Obama, knowing very well that Obama has raised millions to win the seat. Let’s hope whoever wins will work harder to get this country back on track.
