San Joaquin County Supervisor, Carlos Villapudua, has been appointed to the San Joaquin County Council of Governments.
The San Joaquin Council of Governments (SJCOG) is comprised of representatives from San Joaquin County and its cities including Stockton, Lodi, Manteca, Tracy, Ripon, Escalon and Lathrop.
“I am excited to be part of the Council of Governments,” said Villapudua. “This is vitally important because of the growth we have experienced in the county over the last decade.”
While regional transportation planning is the primary role of the SJCOG, the committee also participates in airport land use: a topic of importance for the residents of San Joaquin County, as “a vibrant Stockton Airport benefits the whole county and the airport is in my Supervisorial district” says Villapudua.
SJCOG also takes a look at population statistics, airport land use, habitat and open space planning, and other regional issues.
Directors distribute transportation funds, set up policies and develop programs for these regional issues.
For Villapudua, one of the biggest challenges to improve the region’s transportation system is reduced revenues.
“Until the economy really begins to grow again, we are going to have to scale back or defer maintenance and new projects. At the same time, we need to ensure residents and taxpayers in the county have the safest and most convenient transportation possible.”
