San Joaquin County — The Coalition of Mexican-American Organizations (known for its acronym in Spanish COMA) announced that the 2012 Cinco de Mayo Parade will be held May 6th at 11:00 a.m. at Stockton’s downtown.
“Peace… PAZ EN EL VALLE (peace in the valley); is the theme for this year’s parade,” announced Ines Ruiz-Huston, President of COMA. “Our community is a victim of all the violence and we, as a Coalition, are making a call to stop the violence,” she added.
Additionally, the Coalition is hosting a “King and Queen contest for high school seniors,” explained Ruiz-Huston, “The winner of the Cinco de Mayo’s King and Queen will be highlighted during the parade in a special float.” The Cinco de Mayo Parade is sanctioned and judged by the Pacific Coast Judges. The winners will be announced at the “Free Financial Literacy Workshop and Nuestra Salud event at the Stockton Civic Theatre subsequent to the parade.”
At the event, Fathers and Families will also have information about keeping peace in our community. Sus Finanzas, a non-for-profit organization providing free financial literacy courses and personal finance development, will also be hosting a seminar. “We are offering an educational workshop on finance at the Stockton Civic Theatre,” noted Leandro Vicuña, founder of Sus Finanzas.
“We are planning to also have health care screenings at no-cost,” added Ruiz-Huston.
During the meeting on Saturday April 7th, the Coalition voted for this year’s parade Grand Marshalls and they are: Stockton Unified School District’s President, Sara Cazares as the Amiga Grand Marshall; Father Dean McFalls of St. Mary’s Church as the Amigo Grand Marshall; and the late John Aguilar will be honored as Posthumous Grand Marshall.
