In the early 70's Spain was still mired in economic plans promoted in the postwar period thanks to which economic growth was exemplary and source of pride for the country's leaders.
At that time exactly 31 July 1973 leaving the SEAT factory in the Zona Franca de Barcelona Seat 600 last produced a vehicle that marked a before and after in the Spanish society and marked the beginning of motorization in our country.
This year is no less than 40 years of production to 600 40 years in which the evolution of the automotive industry has been significantly met. Building on the anniversary of a vehicle that marked several generations we review the history of the model with SEAT.
The SEAT 600 as generic and all versions denomination is the great myth of the departure of the Spanish motorization in the postwar era icon. No other model has been so ingrained in our collective subconscious nor as sentimental memory or as a memory of their presence on our streets and highways.
With the SEAT 600 many middle class families made the dream of acquiring their own vehicle for approximately 63000 pesetas which today are € 378.54. Another significant finding that offers a clear view of how much times have changed.
The output of the dealer at the wheel of the new car having heard the advice of the tester who betrayed him was the highlight of an odyssey that had begun several weeks or even months before. The first unit left the factory in June 1957 and a year after production had already multiplied by six.
Initially the SEAT 600 had a 633 cc engine displacement and 18/20 hp remained in production for six years before moving on to the versions D E and L-Special with 767 cc raising its strength to 25 CV and then to 28 hp. In all cases the body remained practically unchanged regardless of the shift in opening doors since 1970.
But the 600-D appeared in 1963 and its successor the E could be considered as "600" par excellence: the engine that would be final until the end of its existence faced the harsh conditions of demanding paths of those times. But the SEAT 600 also had other virtues obviously. First its body design leveraging its 3.30 meters in length with a carrier in which theoretically fit four people well and very fair five although in practice they got many more as sure many will be able to explain .
The SEAT 600 had a good robustness and also offered ease of repair because his mechanics were simple and accessible. Moreover there were parts almost everywhere; not only in the network but in all accessories stores and so with small or not so small repairs lasted years and years.
In terms of performance the 600 getting a top speed of 115 km / h and covering the first 1000 meters in 45.5 seconds a negligible figure if we talk about an engine yielding 28 hp maximum. Furthermore consumption in town was 10 liters per 100 kilometers and highway was content to 6.5 liters with a range of 461 kilometers.
It is inevitable to compare these data with those of today and in the case of its closest counterpart the SEAT Mii urban vehicle reaches a top speed of 172 km / h and covers the first 1000 meters in 35.4 seconds (10 seconds less). All with a power of 60 or 75 hp and consumption in city of 5.1 liters / 100 km.
Throughout its history SEAT has had in its class with an outstanding supply of small utilities that starting with the SEAT 600 continued with the 133 Panda Marbella Arosa and currently with the Mii.
All of them each in its time was erected as suitable answers for mobility in both city and highway driving. But it is beyond doubt that the 600 was the model that not only launched this important series but put Spain on wheels.
With nearly 800000 units produced the SEAT 600 was manufactured until 1973 when the model had been already very dated compared to vehicles that appeared in those years. Closed one of the most successful chapters in the history of SEAT but also showed that Spanish society was ready to continue to evolve and in the same way start getting all kinds of arrivals from other parts of Europe vehicles.
He is best remembered model and the true icon of motoring in Spain. In this sense we must not forget that in 1970 one in four cars circulating in our country was a 600. Because as the advertising time said "there is only one car like the SEAT 600". for the other reviews about the newest cars visit here.
