Faith: A Short Life with So Much Left to Remember

By Fr. Dean McFalls,

The Mossdale Bridge is an uninviting place to be on an early winter morning.

I ventured out on its aging wooden timbers the morning we began Angela’s services.  Already the sun was working hard to break through a cloud barrier.  A chilly wind mixed with cool air rising from the river down below.  With the gaps of empty space so visible between old railroad ties and through the grey metal grating, I made sure my cell phone and wallet were secure.  What seemed thoroughly insecure was my safety as I began climbing the staircase. God, the Earth and Ozone: Stockton’s Diocese pushes for clean air, pairing environmental advocacy with faith

Betsy Reifsnider's Office

A tall, brown-haired, soft-eyed woman sits back and laughs. On her office desk is a portrait of the Dalia Lama pasted next to Queen Elizabeth, and behind her desk hangs a green t-shirt that states, “Got Asthma?” It shows the lungs of a healthy child and the lungs of one in five children living in the San Joaquin Valley, one of the most polluted places in the country. Betsy Reifsnider’s unassuming cubicle looks like many in the environmental activist realm, but she is working for the Catholic Church, specifically Stockton’s Diocese–and she is in the lead. As part of a growing national movement pairing ecology with faith, Reifsnider has the only paid Catholic environmental advocacy position in the nation. Continue reading »

Faith: Our Response to 9/11: a Legacy of Questions

By Fr. Dean McFalls, St. Mary’s Parish,

Stockton, CA. September 10th, 2011- Like all of you, I remember distinctly where I was and what I was doing on that Tuesday morning when the world changed forever.

Something prompted me to do what I never did: turn on the television.

The rest of that day passed like a dream. I can hardly remember anything.

Suddenly, the Modesto Bee’s endless front-page repetition of the Chandra Levy mystery and Congressman Gary Condit’s suspected connection went silent. Suddenly, it was as if the Dot-Com crash had never taken place. Continue reading »

An Anniversary to Regret Forever

father dean

www.bilingualweekly.com | Fr. Dean McFalls, St. Mary’s 8/14/11

A God Who Will Not Be Re-Invented.

Fr. Dean McFalls, St. Mary’s, Stockton, on

Trinity Sunday (June 19, 2011)

Last Sunday, the Word’s own interpreter made an appearance at St. Mary’s. Of course, the Mass is permeated with the Word, both in the scriptures read and in the content of our prayers – not to mention, we hope, in the homily – but this unique privilege was completely unexpected.  I had returned to the sanctuary after our fifth service, when all was quiet and soft music played. No one was present, but the afternoon light painted life-tones across the walls as it passed from heaven through the stained glass windows. A man was pacing back and forth in that open space between the people and the altar, reading aloud, as it were, to the spirit of the church.  He seemed to stop and go, as if uncertain how to pronounce the text.  Continue reading »

SUNDAY COMMENTARY:Last Liftoff for a Historic Institution?

father dean

Fr. Dean of St. Mary’s church

It takes a gargantuan effort to launch even a single shuttle.  STS-135 “last Space Shuttle mission” is a bitter-sweet final launch.  Behind the scenes, thousands unseen heroes all collaborate in what amounts to a minor miracle every time a mission is successfully brought to conclusion.
